For all of you wondering how our upstairs renovation is coming along, the answer is: slooooowly. After all, we can only work on the weekends most of the time, but progress is being made. We’ve shared the overall plan with you in this post, and the last progress picture you’ve seen was in this post. So here’s a quick update.
Since sharing the picture you see above, we’ve gotten quite a bit done. We added in the subfloor. We hung greenboard on the bathroom walls and ceiling and cement board in the shower. For those of you who are unfamiliar, greenboard is essentially drywall with a water resistant paper coating that is designed to hold up better in wet areas like bathrooms. Cement board is hung like drywall, but is made of cement and reinforcing fibers. It is usually used as a backing for tile because it can withstand the weight of the tile better than drywall. We’ve mudded and sanded and mudded and sanded all of the seams in the drywall (of which there are many since our bathroom is shaped weird and the ceilings and walls in our old house are not perfectly level in some places). Seth waterproofed the shower with Kerdi waterproofing membrane by Schluter, which I will get him to write a post about sometime soon so you all can get an idea of how it works and why we chose that method. I cleaned up the room after all of the thinset and drywall dust settled.
Since taking these quick pictures for you, I’ve primed the walls and ceiling with Kilz oil-based primer, which was a noxious and gooey adventure I’ll share with you soon. I’ve also got one coat of white paint on the ceiling with another hopefully going up today or tomorrow. We’re hoping to get at least the shower tiled this weekend. We’re seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, at least in the bathroom. Then we just have to tackle the rest of the upstairs. Who wants to come help hang drywall?
